Shared server guidance · Question & answer

Should my server use Linux or Windows Server?

Choose the operating system supported by your application and by the people who will maintain it. Both Linux and Windows can host many server workloads, but specific software, drivers and management tools may require one platform. An operating system’s installation minimum is not a production sizing recommendation.

Before you start

  • The application vendor’s supported operating systems and your administration requirements.

Instructions

1. Start with compatibility

Identify required databases, runtimes, directory integration, scheduled jobs and management agents. Check supported versions and editions. A workload depending on a Windows-only component may need Windows Server; a Linux package or script may require adaptation before it can operate on Windows.

2. Compare the ongoing work

Consider patching, remote access, monitoring, licence administration and how your team diagnoses failures. For either platform, use a supported release and an agreed maintenance process. Include application licences and any paid support subscriptions in the comparison rather than treating the operating-system image as the whole cost.

3. Validate the intended deployment

Test the application’s main operations, data import, authentication and recovery in the selected environment. Check required storage and memory under representative demand. Plan how existing scripts, paths, permissions and scheduled jobs will change if you move between platforms.

Check the result

  • The chosen OS release and edition are supported by all critical components.
  • The team can maintain and recover the installed service using documented procedures.

Troubleshooting

The software runs but the vendor will not support it
Compare the exact version and platform with the support matrix. Technical startup alone does not establish a supported configuration.
