Shared server guidance · Question & answer

What makes a server recovery point application-consistent?

An application-consistent recovery point preserves data in a state the application can correctly resume. A filesystem snapshot may be crash-consistent without capturing every related component at the same logical moment. The correct method depends on the database, storage layout and application design.

Before you start

  • A map of database files, transaction logs, uploaded files and external storage dependencies.

Instructions

1. Identify the consistency boundary

Determine which data must agree: database records, uploaded objects, queues and transaction logs may live on separate volumes or services. Include configuration needed to interpret the data. A recovery point for the operating-system disk may omit a separately attached data disk.

2. Use the application’s supported method

Review the vendor’s procedure for the installed version. PostgreSQL, for example, distinguishes logical dumps, filesystem methods and continuous archiving. Copying changing database files with a general file-copy tool is not automatically a valid database recovery method. Multi-volume snapshots require the coordination the database and storage documentation specify.

3. Validate the recovered relationship

In an isolated test, check database startup, transaction recovery and records that refer to files or queued work. Test a meaningful business operation and reconcile expected totals or identifiers. Record any required write pause, log sequence or external dependency in the recovery procedure.

Check the result

  • The recovered application starts without missing required data or inconsistent references.
  • The documented method covers every volume and component inside the consistency boundary.

Troubleshooting

The database starts but uploaded documents are missing
Compare the database and object/file recovery points. A successful database recovery does not establish consistency with independently captured application files.
