Does adding swap increase my VPS RAM allocation?
Swap uses storage as an additional place for eligible memory pages; it does not increase the VPS’s physical RAM allocation. It can help some workloads tolerate peaks, but heavy paging can greatly increase latency and cannot bypass platform limits.
Instructions
1. Inspect the guest’s current state
Read memory and configured swap without changing it.
free -h
swapon --show
vmstat 1 5Compare available memory and active swap traffic. A configured swap area is not the same as continuously swapping during the incident.
2. Check the relevant allocation boundary
A virtual machine’s guest swap remains subject to its storage and workload characteristics. A system-container service or application cgroup can additionally limit memory and swap usage, so a guest-level change may not be permitted or effective.
3. Choose a measured remedy
Review memory leaks, worker counts, caches and sustained working-set needs. If the workload regularly exceeds its useful memory allocation, plan appropriate capacity rather than relying on swap as a performance upgrade. Any swap change should follow the guest distribution’s documented storage procedure.
Check the result
- The difference between assigned RAM, available memory and swap use is understood.
- The chosen remedy addresses sustained workload demand without hiding recurring memory pressure.
Troubleshooting
- swapon is not permitted
- The container or provider policy may control this capability; do not attempt to bypass it.
- The application is still killed despite free swap
- Check service or container memory limits and the operating system’s out-of-memory evidence.
