VPS · Question & answer

Can I run Windows Server and Remote Desktop on a VPS?

Windows Server can run on a VPS where the platform offers a compatible, properly licensed image and adequate resources. Remote administration and hosting desktops or applications for users can have different licensing requirements, so confirm the intended use with the service provider.

Instructions

1. Confirm the exact Windows offering

Ask which Windows version and edition are available, whether the operating-system licence is included, what activation arrangement applies and whether your application needs additional licences. Do not assume a Linux VPS price includes Windows rights.

2. Describe the Remote Desktop use case

State whether access is solely for administration or for users running desktops and applications. Review the relevant Microsoft terms and the provider’s licensing model, including any applicable Remote Desktop Services access licensing. Successful login or activation is not by itself proof of complete licensing entitlement.

3. Verify the authorised connection

After provisioning, use the approved access details and source restrictions.

Local Windows PowerShell
Test-NetConnection 203.0.113.10 -Port 3389

Use the actual assigned RDP port. TCP reachability is separate from RDP authentication, Network Level Authentication and licensing configuration.

Check the result

  • The selected Windows image and intended workload are covered by the documented service and licensing arrangement.
  • Authorised remote access works with the required security controls.

Troubleshooting

The template list does not show Windows
Ask whether the exact service supports Windows rather than installing an arbitrary image.
Multiple users need hosted desktops
Confirm the appropriate RDS deployment and licence model before treating administrative access as an end-user desktop service.
