How do I inspect VMware ESXi host inventory through supported access?

Use the vSphere or ESXi management interfaces for normal host administration. ESXi Shell is a separate troubleshooting facility that must be explicitly enabled and authorised under the host’s access policy. An ESXi session is not a general Linux server: Linux package managers and ordinary distribution service commands do not apply.

Before you start

  • Host-specific authorisation and a supported management interface; shell access only when explicitly approved.

Instructions

1. Confirm the host and access method

Select the intended host in its authorised management interface and review its product version and hardware summary. Check account privileges and any lockdown or restricted-access policy before requesting shell access.

2. Run narrowly scoped inventory queries if shell use is approved

These commands apply only inside an authorised ESXi Shell session. They report version and hardware platform information without changing configuration.

Remote ESXi Shell
esxcli system version get
esxcli hardware platform get

Record product/build and platform identity. Available ESXCLI namespaces depend on the installed release; use that host’s help and matching vendor documentation.

3. Close the troubleshooting access window

Follow the organisation’s approved timeout and service policy after the required diagnostic work. Keep host and hardware identifiers within the authorised support record.

Check the result

  • The reported build and hardware identify the correct host, the evidence answers the diagnostic question and temporary shell access follows the approved closure procedure.

Troubleshooting

SSH is refused
Check whether the service and user shell permissions are intentionally restricted; do not treat this as a Linux daemon failure.
A documented ESXCLI command is absent
Consult the reference matching the installed host version.
Licensing or feature availability is uncertain
Verify the current entitlement and vendor support terms for that deployment instead of relying on historical ESXi licensing assumptions.
