What should I check before using a dedicated server as a Proxmox VE host?
Treat a Proxmox VE deployment as a hypervisor installation and migration project. Confirm hardware support, guest resource requirements, storage design and remote recovery access before choosing the installation layout. Installing a hypervisor onto a server already running applications can replace or reconfigure their operating environment and must be planned explicitly.
Before you start
- An approved hypervisor installation or migration plan and verified console access.
Instructions
1. Inventory the intended host and disks
Review the exact machine and existing disk layout before selecting installation media or a storage backend. The report does not authorise any disk to be erased.
lscpu
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTSMatch the available CPUs, physical disks and existing mounts to the proposed guest capacity and installation target. Account for host memory and storage overhead.
2. Design management, storage and guest networks
Confirm the provider’s VLAN, MAC address and routed-IP rules. Choose a supported storage backend with appropriate redundancy, performance and capacity; establish console access independent of guest networking.
3. Inspect an already installed Proxmox host
Use the platform’s own storage status view after a supported installation, not as an installation command on an arbitrary Linux server.
pvesm statusReview the configured storage backends and available space. Shared-storage availability and cluster quorum need separate checks for clustered designs.
Check the result
- The installation target, management path, storage backend and guest network design are documented, and a representative guest works before applications migrate.
Troubleshooting
- A storage backend appears available but cannot hold the intended content
- Check its enabled content types, node restrictions and backend capabilities.
- A guest cannot reach the network
- Verify the bridge and provider addressing model; a physical port does not automatically permit arbitrary guest MAC addresses.
