Which VPS settings can I change inside the guest operating system?
Administrator access inside a VPS controls the guest operating system within the capabilities assigned to it. CPU allocation, physical host scheduling, virtual-device attachment and many recovery actions belong to the provider’s management layer.
Instructions
1. Identify the layer of the requested change
Guest tasks include managing permitted packages, services, users and guest firewall rules. Platform tasks include changing the purchased allocation, attaching supported virtual hardware and restoring provider-managed snapshots.
2. Inspect the guest without assuming host authority
A Linux virtualisation check can identify the environment but does not grant control over it.
systemd-detect-virt
uname -rThese commands describe the guest environment and kernel. They do not expose privileged access to the host hypervisor.
3. Use the appropriate authorised control
For provider-side operations, use the controls actually offered for the selected VPS in Britixo or request support. For guest changes, follow the guest OS’s documented procedure. If a capability is withheld by the platform, do not attempt to bypass that restriction from inside the guest.
Check the result
- The requested change is assigned to the correct guest or provider control layer.
- The final state is checked both in the control panel and inside the guest where relevant.
Troubleshooting
- A root command still reports operation not permitted
- The action may require a host capability, device or policy that the guest does not possess.
- A plan upgrade is not visible in the guest
- Check completion status and whether the guest needs an approved restart or resource-discovery step.
