Dedicated servers · Question & answer

What should I check before cancelling or returning a dedicated server?

Server cancellation should follow verified workload retirement or migration, not just a decision to stop paying for the machine. Confirm that no required application, DNS record, scheduled job or external integration still depends on it. Separate technical readiness from the provider’s cancellation process, notice period and final billing confirmation.

Before you start

  • Authority over the server contract and a verified workload retirement or migration plan.

Instructions

1. Check remaining workloads and scheduled activity

On a systemd-based Linux server, review running services and timers as part of a wider inventory. Containers, hypervisor guests and other schedulers require their own checks.

Remote Linux shell
systemctl list-units --type=service --state=running --no-pager
systemctl list-timers --all --no-pager

Use this evidence to find remaining dependencies. An empty or short list does not prove that every application, user cron job or external dependency has been retired.

2. Complete the technical handover

Verify the destination service, remove obsolete routing or DNS references through their approved change process, and revoke credentials or API access tied to the retired machine. Agree the storage sanitisation and evidence requirements with the provider.

3. Close the provider process

Submit cancellation through the authorised account workflow only after the required migration and retention decisions are complete. Obtain the effective end date and confirmation of hardware, IP and billing disposition.

Check the result

  • No required workload depends on the retired server, access and media handling are resolved, and the provider confirms the agreed termination date and final service status.

Troubleshooting

The old server still receives traffic
Trace DNS, cached endpoints, monitoring and external integrations before decommissioning.
Cancellation is submitted but charges continue
Check the actual effective date and contractual notice process with the provider.
Ownership of a remaining service is unclear
Assign an accountable owner and resolve it before powering off or returning the server.
