Dedicated servers · Question & answer

How do I know whether a dedicated-server disk can be hot-swapped safely?

Hot-swap capability describes supported physical removal while powered on; it does not guarantee that removing any drive preserves data or service. The chassis, backplane, controller, drive and software stack must support the operation. Current redundancy and filesystem use determine whether the specific removal is safe, including on a server whose drive carriers are hot-swappable.

Before you start

  • Verified physical drive identity and the exact chassis/controller service documentation.

Instructions

1. Identify the storage stack and active dependencies

Read the device layout and, where Linux MD is used, the array state. Hardware RAID and ZFS need their own supported status tools.

Remote Linux shell
lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTS
cat /proc/mdstat

Determine whether the selected physical drive belongs to a redundant array, a single mounted filesystem or another critical layer. A degraded or rebuilding array needs specific review.

2. Verify the exact model procedure

Match the selected drive’s serial and bay to the provider’s inventory. Follow the server/controller service guide, including any supported prepare-for-removal step, rather than extrapolating from another model’s carrier design.

3. Set stop and acceptance conditions

Authorise only the identified component and stop if identity or remaining redundancy differs from the plan. After insertion, verify the expected disk and array behaviour before completing the maintenance.

Check the result

  • The provider confirms model-specific hot-swap support, the authorised target is unambiguous and the current storage state can tolerate the planned operation.

Troubleshooting

The operating system uses the drive directly
A live mounted filesystem can be disrupted even when physical hot-swap is supported.
Another member is already failing
Reassess recoverability before removal.
A bay LED disagrees with the serial map
Resolve the mismatch with supported controller/provider evidence first.
