Dedicated servers · Question & answer

What should a remote-hands request specify for a dedicated server?

A remote-hands request should make the physical task unambiguous and limit it to the authorised machine and component. Specify the intended action, maintenance window and verification evidence before work starts. A request to inspect cabling or confirm a serial number should not be treated as permission to reboot, reseat hardware or erase storage.

Before you start

  • A provider-supported remote-hands service and authority to request the specific physical operation.

Instructions

1. Verify the machine identity

On a DMI-capable Linux host, read the reported system serial and reconcile it with the provider’s asset record. Firmware data alone may be incomplete.

Remote Linux shell
sudo dmidecode -s system-serial-number

Place the verified asset identifier in the provider’s secure ticket. Do not substitute a hostname alone when several machines could have similar names.

2. Describe the exact physical action

Name the component, bay/port, current serial and expected replacement or cable destination. State whether power interruption is permitted, who can authorise deviations and what the technician must confirm before touching the hardware.

3. Define completion and stop conditions

Request the specific post-work evidence: new serial, port link state, console result or hardware health reading. Stop if labels differ, another component is unhealthy or the intended action cannot be performed within the agreed window.

Check the result

  • The provider confirms the intended machine and scope, records the authorised work and supplies the requested evidence. The service owner verifies application health afterward.

Troubleshooting

The technician finds a different cable or drive
Pause the physical action and reconcile the inventory before proceeding.
A reboot is proposed to finish the task
Review its impact and authorisation separately if it was not part of the agreed scope.
The machine cannot report its serial
Use the provider’s verified asset and location record through the secure support process.
