Why can a server be online while its application is unavailable?
A running server or open port does not prove that the application can complete useful work. The process may be alive while a database, identity provider or critical operation is failing. Monitor infrastructure state and representative application outcomes as separate signals.
Before you start
- A definition of the application’s critical operations and an authorised safe health-check endpoint.
Instructions
1. Identify the monitoring layers
Separate power state, network reachability, TCP connection, TLS validation and application response. A ping check can fail because ICMP is filtered while the website works, and a TCP connection can succeed while every request returns an error. Record exactly what each existing check establishes.
2. Measure a meaningful outcome
Use a bounded check that verifies the expected response and essential dependencies without creating customer transactions. If deeper checks require authentication, use a dedicated limited account and protect its credentials. Distinguish a shallow process liveness check from readiness to serve real traffic.
3. Connect failures to response
Decide which failed layer requires immediate action and which provides diagnostic context. Britixo’s public guide distinguishes enabling service monitoring from repairing an outage; confirm the actual checks and actions supported for your VPS. Link each actionable alert to an owner and a relevant investigation procedure.
Check the result
- Monitoring detects a controlled application failure even while the operating system remains online.
- Each signal has a clear meaning and escalation route.
Troubleshooting
- The dashboard is green while users report errors
- Review the tested endpoint, response content and dependencies. A cached home page or simple port probe may miss the failing transaction path.
