Shared server guidance · Question & answer

How do I make sure server alerts reach the right person?

An alert is useful only if the right responder receives enough context to act. Define ownership, severity and escalation rather than sending every event to an unattended mailbox. Keep the routing plan current when services or staff responsibilities change.

Before you start

  • The service owner, approved notification destinations and the supported monitoring channels.

Instructions

1. Define actionable ownership

Assign a responsible team and fallback contact for each critical service. Specify which conditions require urgent response and which belong in scheduled work. Include the affected service, timestamp, symptom, current metric and a runbook reference, while keeping secrets and customer data out of notifications.

2. Configure supported routing

In Britixo VPS Control Panel → Notifications, use the fields and channels returned for the selected service. Confirm the metric, condition and destination before saving. Systems such as Alertmanager can group related events and suppress dependent noise; use only features supported by the chosen platform.

3. Verify delivery and lifecycle

Arrange a controlled test with the responder and confirm receipt, acknowledgement and resolution messages where supported. Check the fallback if the primary destination fails. Give maintenance silences an owner and expiry, and review whether they accidentally cover unrelated services.

Check the result

  • The intended responder receives a test alert with enough context to investigate.
  • Fallback routing and the end of a maintenance silence are understood.

Troubleshooting

The rule exists but no one receives a message
Check firing state, destination, channel availability, routing matchers, grouping delays and active silences. Saving a rule alone does not prove end-to-end notification delivery.
