How do I check or request reverse DNS for my VPS IP?
Reverse DNS maps an IP address to a hostname and is normally controlled by the address owner or provider. It is separate from the domain’s ordinary A or AAAA record. Use the reverse-DNS operation offered for the specific allocated IP.
Instructions
1. Choose the intended hostname
Confirm that the hostname is under your control and that its forward DNS points to the appropriate address where the service requires forward and reverse consistency. A label in the VPS Overview is not automatically a DNS record.
2. Review or update the permitted IP setting
In Britixo, open VPS Networking, inspect the IP details and use Edit reverse DNS where available. Submit the intended hostname, then check the operation result. Do not assume you can add arbitrary IP addresses to the service.
3. Verify the public lookup after processing
Use a local DNS query and allow for caching.
nslookup 203.0.113.10This performs a reverse lookup for the example address. Replace it with the actual allocated IP and compare the returned hostname.
Check the result
- The selected IP’s reverse lookup returns the intended hostname after processing and cache expiry.
- Required forward and reverse records are consistent for the application.
Troubleshooting
- The control is unavailable
- Ask the provider or address owner about the supported reverse-DNS procedure.
- The old PTR still appears
- Check the operation result and resolver caching before resubmitting the change.
