VPS · Question & answer

Can I move a VPS IP address to another instance for failover?

An IP can move between instances only if the service explicitly supports that operation and its scope. A floating or failover address is a provider-managed network feature, not a capability created merely by adding the same address to another guest.

Instructions

1. Confirm address portability and limits

Ask whether the address can move within a project, host group, network or region, and whether guest route changes are required. Distinguish an additional fixed address from a movable address; names vary between platforms.

2. Prepare the destination application

Verify current data, credentials, certificate coverage, firewall policy and listening service before moving traffic. Prevent both instances from acting as an uncontrolled primary for stateful work. Decide how existing connections and data writes will be handled.

3. Use the supported control and validate externally

Perform only the available authorised provider operation, then inspect its final state. Test from an external approved client and confirm the intended application instance answers. Keep a documented way to return traffic if the destination fails its checks.

Check the result

  • The address is explicitly eligible for the intended move.
  • External traffic reaches the prepared destination and stateful application ownership remains correct.

Troubleshooting

The guest accepts the address but traffic does not arrive
Provider routing or anti-spoofing policy may not assign it to that interface; use the supported address-management operation.
The required region move is unsupported
Use an approved alternative such as a new endpoint and planned DNS or load-balancer cutover.
