Is the VPS control-panel name the same as its Linux hostname?
The control-panel name is a service label and may not change the guest hostname. DNS names and operating-system machine identifiers are separate again. Treat each as an independent setting unless the platform explicitly synchronises them.
Instructions
1. Check the selected service label
In Britixo’s VPS Overview, use the displayed name and identifier to select the correct server. A permitted rename changes the visible label according to that operation’s scope; do not assume it edits guest files or DNS.
2. Read the guest hostname
On a systemd Linux guest, inspect the static hostname only.
hostnamectl --staticThis avoids dumping the complete host inventory. If hostnamectl is unavailable, use the guest’s documented hostname command.
3. Separate name changes from identity changes
A DNS record can point to the VPS without matching its static hostname. The machine ID is an internal identifier that should remain unique and should not be published. Do not erase it on a running server to make a dashboard label match; cloning requires an image-specific identity preparation process.
Check the result
- The service label identifies the intended server for administration.
- The guest hostname and relevant DNS records match their respective operational purpose.
Troubleshooting
- Renaming the VPS did not change DNS
- A display-label operation is not a domain DNS edit. Update the correct DNS service through its authorised workflow.
- Cloned guests share identity values
- Review the image preparation process; do not repair uniqueness by blindly deleting identity files on active systems.
